Stochastic Modeling of Biochemical Processes


In this course, we will explore the influence of randomness on biochemical processes. After a brief review of deterministic models (chemical kinetics, law of mass action, Michaelis-Menten kinetics) and an introduction into the theory of stochastic processes (conditional probability, probability distributions, Markov processes), we will develop stochastic models for biochemical processes (chemical master equation, exactly solvable elementary reactions, stochastic simulations, Gillespie algorithm, stochastic gene expression, …). The accompanying tutorial will give students the opportunity to discuss their results of bi-weekly problems. This course is also part of the master's degree in bioinformatics at U Potsdam.

Carbohydrate chemistry and biology


In this course the students learn about the chemical synthesis and biological functions of carbohydrates and carbohydrate-containing molecules. After finishing the course, the students will be able to design the chemical synthesis of complex and rare carbohydrates and to identify the appropriate methods to characterize the products. Furthermore, the students will know about the biosynthesis of carbohydrates and how to use common enzymes for their preparation and modification. Different types of glycoconjugates will be familiar to the students as well as the relevance of carbohydrate-protein interactions and different methods for their analysis.
