The IMPRS for Functional Material Design (FMD) is dedicated to shaping the next generation of doctoral researchers who will promote the development of new functional materials in a wide range of applications. With a strong emphasis on innovation, the program aims to equip scientists with the expertise to design materials that push technological boundaries while promoting a more sustainable use of resources.

- Collaborative network: Max Planck Institute with the University of Potsdam, Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin
- Cross-institutional research: joint projects, IMPRS conference, and a lecture series on advanced topics and methods
- Bridging disciplines: MSc-level courses to build shared foundations across physics, chemistry, biochemistry, materials engineering, and mathematics
- Structured training: lectures, courses, conferences, and an annual, self-organised doctoral retreat
- Supervision and mentoring: Teaching Faculty (doctoral supervision rights) and Associate Faculty (emerging leaders)
Competitive, fully funded positions: 23 doctoral researchers with 4-year contracts; university-employed students receive an MPI guest contract and office space
